Special Rules

Magnates

Each Player owns their own Newspaper - they should pick a title for it at the start of the game. There's also another, non-player Newspaper - the Daily Monolith.

Turn Structure

Turns are simultaneous, with five phases being played through in turn.

  • Draw Phase. Every player draws one card.
  • Editing Phase. Everyone secretly decides either to publish a specific story (a number of cards from their hand, with some sense of grammar - eg. "WELL-KNOWN" "GORILLA" "FOUND") or pass (and print a pathetic non-story), and says when they've decided.
  • Publishing Phase. Everyone reveals their front page. If they chose to publish, they put the cards on the table for all to see. If they chose to pass, they can either draw a card, or draw until their hand contains three cards.
  • Sales Phase. Each player nominates their favourite headline from those on the table (other than their own). The owner of the most popular headline, if any, may take a Market Share counter - either from the Daily Monolith or (if the Monolith has none left) from a player who passed this round. Headlines are then cleared away for a new round.
  • Discard Phase. Any player with more than five cards discards down to five.

Market Share

You need ten counters or coins to represent each newspaper's Market Share. To begin with, all of these counters belong to the Daily Monolith. If a Player ever owns five or more of the counters, they win the game.
