The Silk Market in Beijing, China is a seething mass of no-holds-barred capitalism, with almost everything you could ever want on sale. On sale, that is, if you can beat the sellers at the fine art of negotiation. Silk Market has players take on the role of both buyers and sellers, each trying to get the best deal on products without really knowing how much they're worth.

Special Rules

Definitions

Buyer and Sellers

The active player (i.e. the player whose turn it is) is the Buyer.
The players to the right and left of the Buyer are the Sellers.

"Purchased"

On his turn, the Buyer may purchase a Product card from a Seller. Other Special cards may use this term.
A purchased card is placed face-down in front of the player who purchased it.

Category

There are 4 categories used in the game; Accessories, Clothing, Entertainment, and Souvenirs.
If a card is part of this category, it will be shown below the title. Note that some cards can have more than 1 category.

Card Types

There are 4 card types in the game: Shopping List cards, Shopping Bonus cards, Product cards, Cost cards and Special cards.

Shopping List cards

Shopping List cards are the main way that you get Buyer points.
Each has a corner value, which shows how many points the Shopping List card could get you, or cost you. Each also has a number of requirements listed for the Shopping List to be fulfilled. If it is, you get the point value of the card. Otherwise, you lose the card's point value.
Shopping List cards are considered Things.

Shopping Bonus cards

Shopping Bonus cards help you get more Buyer points.
Each has a corner value, showing how many extra Buyer points you get for each purchased Product card of the correct category.
Shopping Bonus cards are considered Things.

Product cards

Product cards are kept in your hand. They can be revealed when you are a Seller, and you want to purchase them when you are a Buyer.
Product cards can have a corner value, which shows how many bonus Buyer points you get if you purchase that card.
Product cards are considered Things.

Cost cards

Cost cards are drawn by Sellers, and represent the wholesale cost of the Product.
Cost cards have corner values, which show how many Seller points are taken away from your Seller score at the end of the game.
There are also 4 Cost cards called "Closing Time" which act to end the game.
Cost cards are considered Things.

Special cards

Special cards can be played at certain times to do special things. Check the card's text to see when it can be used, and what it does.
Special cards are considered Actions.

Start of Game

Separate the Cost cards into separate decks by category. These are called the Cost decks.
Separate the Shopping List cards into their own deck. Each player draws 3 Shopping List cards and must keep at least one. Once all players have chosen, shuffle the discarded Shopping List cards back into the Shopping List deck.
Separate the Shopping Bonus cards into their own deck. Each player takes 1 Shopping Bonus card and puts it face-down in front of themselves.
The remaining cards (Product and Special cards) are called the deck. Each player takes 4 cards.
Each player should have some way of recording how many points they get during the game as a Seller. This should be kept secret from all other players.
You should also have some sort of timer, which will be used when players are haggling.

Playing The Game

On his turn, the Buyer does these steps in order, then play passes to the next player.

Step 1: Draw Cards

Every player (not just the Buyer) draws or discards cards as needed so that they have 4 cards in their hands.

Step 2: Exchange Shopping Lists

The Buyer may discard 2 of his Shopping List cards. That player must then draw 3 Shopping List cards from the Shopping List deck, take 2 of them, and shuffle the remaining Shopping List card and the 2 discarded Shopping List cards back into the deck.
If the Buyer does this, his turn ends immediately.

Step 3: Draw Shopping Lists

The Buyer may draw 2 Shopping List cards from the Shopping List deck. The Buyer must take at least 1 Shopping List card. Shuffle any unchosen Shopping List cards back into the Shopping List deck.

Step 4: Show Products

Each Seller picks one Product card from their hands. Both show their chosen Product at the same time.
Each Seller takes a Cost card from the appropriate Price deck (i.e. matching the Product category). The Seller can look at the card, but must keep it secret. If the Product card has 2 categories, the Seller may choose which Price deck he will draw from, but must keep that Cost card.

Step 5: Haggle

The Buyer and the Sellers now have 1 minute to haggle.
Haggling means that you negotiate a number of points that a Seller will get in exchange for giving that Seller's Product card to the Buyer.
If the Buyer and a Seller agree before 1 minute passes, the Buyer has purchased that Seller's Product card.
If there is no agreement after 1 minute is up, each Seller can name 1 final price for their respective Products. The Buyer can choose to accept either price and purchase that Product, or can reject both.
When a Product is purchased, the successful Seller adds the agreed-upon number of points to his current Seller score and keeps the Cost card face-down in front of himself.
When a Product is not purchased, the unsuccessful Seller (or Sellers) returns the Product card to his hand, and puts the Cost card on the bottom of the appropriate deck.

End of Game

Each category of Cost cards has 1 "Closing Time" card. If a Seller draws this card, they must reveal it immediately. When 2 "Closing Time" cards have been revealed, the game ends. Players reveal their purchased cards and Cost cards, and can begin figuring out how many points they have.

Scoring

Every player will have a Buyer and Seller score. Your total score is the sum of your Buyer and Seller scores.
Your Buyer score is the total point value of all your purchased Product cards, plus any Buyer bonuses you've won. (Keep in mind that your Shopping Bonus card can change how much some of your purchased Product cards are worth.)
Your final Seller score is the Seller score you got during the game, minus the total value of your Price cards, plus any Seller bonuses you've won.

Buyer Bonuses

  • Any player who buys 1 card of each Product type gets a 30 point bonus.
  • Any player who buys 6 cards of one Product type gets a 50 point bonus.

Seller Bonus

  • Any player who sells 1 card of each Product type gets a 30 point bonus.
  • Any player who sells 6 cards of one Product type gets a 50 point bonus.

This game has a lot of cards, so the card list is separated into sections. Each section is usually a deck (or more than one deck, in the case of Cost cards).
